The intersection of high-octane physical choreography and intimate indie storytelling is currently capturing the attention of international buyers at the prestigious Tokyo International Film Festival’s content market, TIFFCOM. Sales and distribution outfit Cappu Films has made significant waves at the market by securing a vital regional distribution agreement for the French martial arts action feature Red Bird while simultaneously picking up worldwide international sales rights for the American indie romantic drama Step Back, Doors Closing.
The dual announcement highlights Cappu Films’ diverse commercial strategy, balancing pulse-pounding, stunt-heavy genre fare with character-driven arthouse romance. As global distributors scout for fresh cinematic perspectives in Tokyo, these two distinct titles showcase the breadth of modern independent filmmaking originating from Europe and North America.
Red Bird Brings Hard-Hitting French Stuntwork to the CIS Region
The gritty French action thriller Red Bird has officially expanded its global footprint, with Cappu Films completing a distribution agreement with Kinologistika LLC. The deal covers the lucrative CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) region, encompassing Russia and several former Soviet states.
Directed by an eclectic trio of filmmakers—Alexandre Laugier, Thomas Habibes, and Houssam Adili—Red Bird is deeply rooted in the physical reality of stunt performance and martial arts. Both Habibes and Adili transition from behind-the-scenes stunt work to take the central leading roles, joined on screen by a supporting cast that includes Eric Delcourt, Jean-Louis Tribes, and Jean-Marie Paris.
The narrative centers on a protagonist named Max, whose late father operated under the covert moniker "Red Bird." When the elder man passes away under mysterious and unexplained circumstances, Max and his close friend and confidant, Sam, embark on a dangerous quest to uncover the truth. Their investigation ultimately plunges them headfirst into a sprawling, perilous conspiracy.
Shot extensively on location in the sun-drenched, gritty port city of Marseille, the film was produced entirely independently. It places practical action, raw combat choreography, and physical prowess front and center, eschewing over-reliance on computer-generated imagery in favor of authentic danger. Following its production, the film was picked up by SOUTHfilms, which managed its theatrical release across French cinemas in January.
Reflecting on the successful international trajectory of the project, Janice Woo of Cappu Films emphasized the unique selling point of the feature. "Red Bird brings the energy of its filmmakers and stunt team directly to the screen," Woo stated. "We’re pleased to have secured a CIS deal and look forward to introducing the film to more distributors in Tokyo."
Step Back, Doors Closing Expands Global Reach Following North American Release
Shifting gears from high-stakes espionage and martial arts to urban romance, Cappu Films has also stepped in to manage international sales for the American indie romance Step Back, Doors Closing. Written and directed by Carter Ward, the film was produced by Ward alongside Jane Hollon and Kathryn Crabtree.

The romantic drama stars Carmen Berkeley and Reilly Walters as Ryan and Julisa, two ordinary strangers who happen to cross paths on a Washington, D.C. Metro train. Over the course of an intense, compressed 24-hour window, the pair wander through the nation’s capital, slowly dropping their guard and opening up about their deepest aspirations, vulnerabilities, and existential fears. As the hours tick away, a genuine romance takes root, supported by co-stars Michelle Macedo, Ashley Romans, and Mershad Torabi.
The project first gained traction on the festival circuit when it premiered at Los Angeles’ respected Dances With Films festival in 2024. Following its festival run, Freestyle Digital Media acquired the rights, releasing the film across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. With its domestic footprint established, Cappu Films is now actively courting international broadcasting and theatrical partners for remaining global territories at TIFFCOM.
Carter Ward, representing Arden Pictures, expressed enthusiasm regarding the new partnership with Cappu Films. "I could not be more proud or excited to partner with Cappu Films," Ward said. "Their support means the world not only to myself, but our entire cast and crew. We can’t wait for international audiences to see the version of Washington, D.C. we know and love. One where meet-cutes are still possible, and single weekends can change the trajectory of our lives forever."
The Significance of TIFFCOM in the Global Film Marketplace
The Tokyo International Film Festival’s market arm, TIFFCOM, serves as a crucial bridge between Asian markets and Western independent cinema. As one of the leading content markets in Asia, it provides a vital platform for sales agents like Cappu Films to connect with regional buyers from Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and beyond, while maintaining strong pipelines into European and CIS territories.
For independent titles like Red Bird and Step Back, Doors Closing, markets like TIFFCOM are essential for achieving commercial viability in an increasingly competitive globalized media landscape. Without the massive marketing budgets of major Hollywood studio releases, independent films rely heavily on targeted regional sales, festival buzz, and strategic international acquisitions to recoup their production costs and build global fanbases.
Cappu Films: A Curated Library Spanning Genres and Eras
The latest acquisitions underscore the diverse positioning of Cappu Films within the global sales arena. The company routinely collaborates with independent filmmakers across a broad spectrum of formats and genres, catering to both mainstream commercial appetites and niche arthouse sensibilities.
Its expansive catalog features everything from high-intensity action, horror, and fantasy to contemplative arthouse features, serialized television content, and revered cinematic classics from the golden era of Hong Kong cinema. By bridging diverse cinematic traditions—from Marseille-set martial arts thrillers to Washington, D.C. walking romances—Cappu Films continues to cement its reputation as a versatile player in international film distribution.
As TIFFCOM continues its run in Tokyo, industry observers will be watching closely to see which additional international territories fall for the gritty charm of Red Bird and the romantic nostalgia of Step Back, Doors Closing.
