This is particularly concerning given that the species is restricted to this specific niche. "Currently, the pace of ecosystem destruction outpaces the capacity of taxonomic studies to keep up," Haddad noted. "Consequently, species that haven’t yet been described are omitted from lists of threatened fauna and remain legally and environmentally vulnerable."

When a species is not formally recognized, it cannot be included in environmental impact assessments, nor can it be prioritized in land-use planning. Consequently, large swaths of the Amazon that are earmarked for development or that fall victim to illegal logging may be destroying unique, uncatalogued species before they are even identified.
